The Artist

Antonio Pelayo -

Mi Familia
My parents first came to the United States as illegal aliens from Mexico in the 60′s. I was born in Glendale, but raised in a small Mexican village. A childhood broken into two countries has been a major subject matter in my art. It’s as though my paintings are still looking for that one home.

I used old family photos as the subjects of these drawings. I intentionally left out the backgrounds, concentrating solely on the figures. If I did the backgrounds, the drawings would be complete, and closed. The story would be done. This way, with the subject all alone and without a sense of place, the drawings asks; “Who am I? Where do I belong?”

Icons
The road is the most familiar place to me. I can step off it a moment, and rest, and draw. People keep passing by. Most of them have homes to get to. This is my home, on the side of the road. I’m comfortable here, have been since I was nine. I rest in the lines that my pencil makes on the page, in the lines of an old man who stops and lets me draw him, or the circular cheek of a fat baby in a father’s arm. I’m looking for something in each line of their faces: their story. Their lives, their past, get etched into their very skin. And I try to capture that story, that moment. Perhaps I’ll find a home there.

La Lucha
El Luchador, the warrior, fights inside and out side. He is in the ring. He is inside us. That’s why we love him, that’s why we cheer for his victories and boo when the enemy throws him to the matt. He wears a mask. (Don’t we all?) And yet we know who he is. He is us, inside every single one of us, hurling himself into the dark place inside us all. His blows in the ring mirror. The blows we feel in our hearts, the kicks and the shock of the daily war. We worry for him. We scream at him. We raise our fists in triumph with him, as though we had been in the ring, as though somehow, he had pulled apart the ropes and called us in.

on February 8, 2012 in Entertainment, Events

LAUNCH LA proudly presents Mi Familia (My Family), award-winning artist, Antonio Pelayo’s first solo exhibition of his professional fine arts career. Mi Familia will run from February 25th through March 17th at the LAUNCH Gallery located at 5900 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. The opening night reception is open to the public and will feature original pieces available for purchase, books containing a collection of Pelayo’s artwork signed by the artist himself and music provided by The Get Down Collective.

From recording his earliest memories and observations with pencil and paper, to exhibiting his work in 15 museum shows around the world and winning several prestigious awards including “Best of Show Ontario Museum 2007” and “People’s Choice Award, 3rd Ward Open Call NY”, Pelayo admits, “Having a solo show is like receiving the highest award in the art world.”

The Mi Familia exhibition includes original works from three series of pencil drawings close to Pelayo’s heart. The first series, Icons, pays homage to those heroes and villains that have shaped the artists’ consciousness from an early age. La Lucha (The Struggle) series reveals the thoughts and dreams of a young man searching for his identity. Finally, in Mi Familia, his most recent drawings display a fondness for his past while coming to terms with the people and cultures that shaped him.

A gifted draftsman held in the highest regard by his peers, Pelayo has been honing his craft his entire life. “Drawing is a skill and discipline, an ancient medium that at times is hard to bring new life to. Drawing is an intimate language…your mind and wrist at work. Antonio shares these intimate moments in his drawing,” Artist Gronk says about Pelayo and his work.

Award winning artist, Antonio Pelayo, is hosting his first solo exhibition, “Mi Familia & Other Pencil on Paper”, from Saturday, February 25, through March 17 at The LAUNCH Gallery in Los Angeles.

For his “Mi Familia” project, Antonio explains: “I used old family photos as the subjects of these drawings. I intentionally left out the backgrounds, concentrating solely on the figures. I did this intentionally because with a background the story would be told. This way, with the subject alone and without a sense of place, the drawings ask “Who am I? Where do I belong?””

That sense of disconnection is a feeling the self-taught artist is all too familiar with. At the age of nine, his family suddenly moved to their rural village in El Palmar, Jalisco, Mexico. Since Antonio was not fluent in Spanish at that time and the life he once lived was hundreds of miles away, he felt alienated from the city life he was used to living in his Glendale, California home.

It was then that Antonio turned to drawings as a way to distract himself from the displacement he was feeling. One of the first art-making memories is of him sneaking into a Catholic church to draw Jesus and various saints on the walls. The young artist would then capture his family, religious symbols, and the rural landscapes of Jalisco in sketches as well.

Several years later, Antonio moved back to Glendale and once again had to acclimate to the culture of a new world. Suddenly, the old saying “you can never go home again” became very loud and clear as Antonio wasn’t sure where he belonged. “A childhood broken into two countries has been a major subject matter in my art. It’s as though my paintings are still looking for that one home,” states the artist.

To this, Antonio found inspiration in the works of Brooklyn-born Frank Frazetta, Peruvian Boris Vallejo and the Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger. He also sought comfort in the works of Mexican art icons such as Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera, which helped him develop his unique style.

Antonio’s art has been shown in various museums and has been awarded several prestigious awards such as “People’s Choice Award, 3rd Ward Open Call NY 2011”, “Juror Award, Creative Art Center 2010”, “Best in Graphite Award, CCAA Museum 2009”, “1st Place Award, Lowrider Arte Magazine 2008” and “Best of Show Ontario Museum 2007”, amongst other awards and recognitions.

“Mi Familia & Other Pencil on Paper” will be up for public display at The LAUNCH Gallery from February 25 through March 17.

I love music, photography, and soccer from all over the world. I also enjoy reading music biographies and love my American bulldog, Duchess; she is my baby. The following words from John Lennon encapture my philosophy on life: “Imagine there’s no countries. It isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion too. Imagine all the people living life in peace”.

-Antonio Pelayo, 2010
Luna De Miel, pencil on paper, 28” x 22”

Lost in Your Eyes, pencil & Prismacolor, 32” x 34”
LAUNCH is a not-for-profit social enterprise that produces, manages and directs events, programs and exhibitions for the purpose of developing artist - audience relationships throughout important Los Angeles communities.
Celebrations for the day are in preparation throughout the year and culminate with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls Day on Nov. 2.

But how have the youth of Los Angeles reinterpreted this festival for themselves?

Dia de los Muertos is a way to remember the dead from one’s family who have passed on. It is celebrated in Mexico and in the United States by those of Mexican heritage.

In LA, typically traditional ceremonies will unfold throughout the week until Nov. 2 at Olvera Street.

Arts organization Self Help Graphics & Art, well known for their involvement in the festivity, also hold similarly more traditional community family processions.

The day usually involves ‘ofrendas’ (offerings) for the dead which can be in the form of food, toys, or alcohol. It is not unusual to see bottles of mescal or tequila placed at altars.

These altars are often decorated with Flor de Muerto (“Flower of the Dead”) which are said to be attractive to the souls of the dead. Families celebrate by making sugar-skulls and drawing on folklore imagery for costumes and artwork.

But artists Antonio Pelayo and Pablo Damas offered an alternative take on the festival.

Pelayo is the curator of an exhibition themed on Dia de los Muertos that focuses more on how the youth have interpreted this festival.

The two artists are in their early 30s sitting at a coffee shop. They are the oldest in the exhibition that will take place.

“I think as far as tradition goes, usually there is some kind of mass involved; it is still a very religious ceremony of remembrance dating back to our ancestors. It is remembering those who have left, but in a positive way- not so much dwelling on the fact that they are gone,” said Damas. “I think now there has been resurgence among our generation to where we are looking back to our ancestry to bring it back. For a while, it kind of got lost. Not just Dia de los Muertos, but a lot of our culture. But now, the youth are getting interested again.”

For his own artwork, Pelayo works predominantly in pencil. After participating in several years of art shows themed on Day of the Dead, he decided to finally create and curate his own event, which has been in the planning for over six months.

Through a close network of Mexican artists, he has organized an exhibition that showcased over 20 artists asking them to create work themed purely on Dia de los Muertos. These include graffiti artists with the youngest from ages 25.

An important element of Pelayo’s exhibition is that he is using it as a platform to expose emerging young artists and talent, some of whom have never exhibited before.

“The artwork we’re going to be showing is more on the contemporary side. Not taking anything away from the traditional, but with our own interpretations,” said Pelayo. “It’s diverse too, in that it’s not only people of Mexican-background contributing. I have a Korean guy and a Filipino girl also in the show. The rest of us are all Latino. So everyone is going to bring their own flavor.”

Both artists emphasize the importance of the positivity of the festival.

Pelayo continued: ” I lived in Mexico for a while. Typical Day of the Dead celebration means there is just a lot of food. My mom would bring more food to the dead than the alive. Typically, we eat tamales. Obviously we drink a lot of tequila and mescal. And there are loads of flowers. It is a celebration to honor and remember our past relatives and you will never see anyone crying or any tears.”

The exhibition takes place on Oct. 30 at the Sabor Lounge on Union Street. There will also be a spoken word poet who will perform a piece on the Day of the Dead in Spanish.

The event also includes face-painting and a taquero, making fresh tacos outside. The after-party continues the celebration with music on rotation including bolero, trio, hip-hop, Latin electronica, ’80s and Spanish rock.

It is these very elements that separate an event like this from the more traditional elements of Dia de los Muertos festivities.

Damas, whose preferred medium is painting, said that this show will make an impact on him. “I lost my mom in March this year, so this show will be more personal for me as far as the piece I create and the celebration too.”

The project has been a labor of love for Pelayo, drawing on help from friends to organize the event.

He points out the role that young people have come to play in this ancestral tradition, ”We are simply using 20th century tools to interpret something that is 3,000 years old, and we’re in the middle of that evolution.”

Though this entire week will be filled with celebrations all over LA, another celebration that younger audiences can look forward to is a Dia de los Muertos celebration held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Oct. 30.

Many civilizations and cultures have created rituals to try and give meaning to human existence.

· Where do we come from?
· Why does life end?
· Is there “life” after death?
· If so, what kind of “life”?
· Can we do something while alive so we can enjoy “life” after death?

These are some of the questions man has asked himself in order to understand our finite existence on this earth.

To the indigenous peoples of Mexico, death was considered the passage to a new life and so the deceased were buried with many of their personal objects, which they would need in the hereafter. Many times even their pets were sacrificed so they would accompany their masters on their long journey.

From pre Columbian times, El Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico, and other Latin countries. This is a very special ritual, since it is the day in which the living remember their departed relatives. Sometimes, when people of other cultures hear for the first time about the celebration of the Day of the Dead, they mistakenly think it must be: gruesome, terrifying, scary, ugly and sad. Nothing further from the truth, Day of the Dead is a beautiful ritual in which we all happily and lovingly remember their loved relatives that have died. Much like when we go to a graveyard to leave some lovely flowers on a tomb of a relative.

May Herz

Join us as we celebrate with a special art Exhibit and an after party Oct 30th at Sabor Lounge!

Featured Artists,

alfie numeric / gino espinosa / j. neftali gonzalez / orestes gonzalez / dennis mendez / jeff lee / ernest anguiano / susan molina / carlos marquez / edward de la torre / pablo damas / ralph silerio / antonio pelayo / alejandra ramos / kristy sandoval / kopye / timoi de leon / salvador santana / grande / dfrnt

October 30th
Art reception 7-9pm
After party 9pm-3am Music by DJ Audio
Free all night
$5/ Valet Parking

Sabor Lounge
847 S Union Ave
LA 90017
( map & directions )
